Book Club:
“I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou with Chris Jackson, Retired Librarian join Chris Jackson and other book enthusiasts in an in-depth discussion of the chosen book at our monthly Book Club. Books can be found at the Narberth Library, or on Amazon.com. Please let us know when you sign up whether you intend to attend the discussion at Borough Hall, or call in through Zoom. Next Session: May 2024: “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou Published in 1969, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" is Maya Angelou's powerful autobiography detailing her challenging yet formative young life. This first book in a seven-part series delves into her experiences from childhood to adolescence. It's a coming-of-age story that showcases the resilience of the human spirit in the face of racism and trauma. Angelou emphasizes the importance of both inner strength and a love for literature as tools for overcoming adversity. The book's title itself, referencing a poem by Paul Dunbar, becomes a metaphor for Angelou's journey towards finding her voice and breaking free from the constraints imposed by racism and societal expectations. Film Club: Hidden Figures
with Ellensue Jacobson Meet virtually with Ellensue Jacobson and other film enthusiasts to watch movies on Zoom, and then join the Film Club discussion later in the same month. Next Session: May 2024: Hidden Figures (Rescheduled from April) Inspired by the true story of three remarkable African American women who crossed all gender, race, and professional lines as they rose through the ranks in NASA, becoming in the process unsung heroes of the Space Race. But those contributions were, for the most part, barely known and rarely talked about -- until now. In early 1961, several remarkable women are three of many “human computers” that work behind the scenes to help put astronaut John Glenn into orbit. Each works in a different area, where their talents are being used, but not credited. Dorothy Vaughan works as acting supervisor of the West Area Computing Division, where the “real” supervisor refuses to acknowledge her true position, keeping all the accolades, and higher pay, for herself. Mary Jackson assists the male engineers designing the heat shield, unable to join their ranks because the only school that teaches engineering in her hometown will not admit colored women. And widowed mother Katherine Gobels is a genius at mathematics and geometry, working in the Space Task Group under a man who refuses to give her the proper clearance to do her job properly. Over the course of a single year, these three women face and conquer their individual challenges, rising in the ranks of NASA through perseverance, skill, and even, in some cases, simple luck. The trio of visionaries would go on to become a hidden inspiration for many others, earning their right to be considered true American heroes who dreamed big -- and, against all odds, fulfilled those dreams.
