Book Club:
“The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store” by James McBride with Chris Jackson, Retired Librarian join Chris Jackson and other book enthusiasts in an in-depth discussion of the chosen book at our monthly Book Club. Books can be found at the Narberth Library, or on Amazon.com. Please let us know when you sign up whether you intend to attend the discussion at Borough Hall, or call in through Zoom. Next Session: July 2024: “The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store” by James McBride While digging the foundations for a new development in Pottstown, Pennsylvania in 1972, workers find a grisly surprise: A human skeleton at the bottom of a well. The question of who died, and why, is a secret buried deep in the past of Chicken Hill, a run-down neighborhood where blacks and immigrant Jews once lived and worked together. America in the 1930s is no easy place for those not considered of the white upper class, but the people of Chicken Hill try to make it work, with the “Heaven and Earth” Grocery Store run by Chona Ludlow and the integrated theatre kept going by Moshe Ludlow providing the common thread that holds them all together. When trouble strikes in the form of a government that wishes to institutionalize an orphaned deaf boy, Chona and the unofficial leader of the Black community on Chicken Hill, Nate Timblin, work together in an effort to save him. But every town has its darkness, and saving one boy may prove harder than anyone imagined. As the story long buried in the Pottstown well unfolds, the minority community of Chicken Hill must draw upon all their strengths to win this battle – a struggle that will highlight not only the horror of greed and betrayal but also the triumphs of compassion and love. Film Club: Out of Africa
with Ellensue Jacobson Meet virtually with Ellensue Jacobson and other film enthusiasts to watch movies on Zoom, and then join the Film Club discussion later in the same month. Next Session: July 2024: Out of Africa A 1985 epic Romantic Drama based on the book written by Isak Dinesen, the movie loosely tells the true tale of a wealthy woman who moves to Africa in 1913 to establish a farm and ends up falling in love with the land, the people, and a big-game hunter who encourages her to explore her dreams. Karen Blixen moves to Africa in 1913 in order to help her new husband, Bror Blixen, run a farm in Nairobi. Unfortunately, Bror is far more interested in guiding hunting safaris than in running the farm and Karen ends up taking on most of the work herself. Undaunted by this monumental task, Karen throws herself into the farm and quickly grows to love the land and its people. She works to help the natives on her land while also attempting to blend in with the upper-class colonists who have made Nairobi their home, all while dealing with a husband who wanders quite frequently to other women. It isn’t long before Karen’s own interests begin to shift, and she finds love in the arms of a big game hunter named Denys Finch Hatton who opens Karen’s eyes to a world she never imagined. But Africa in the 1900s is not an easy place to live, and Karen will soon find herself needing to make some very difficult choices as duty, love, and life all begin to clash in this epic drama set in the wilds of an unforgettable land.
