Book Club:
“Demon of Unrest” by Erik Larson with Chris Jackson, Retired Librarian join Chris Jackson and other book enthusiasts in an in-depth discussion of the chosen book at our monthly Book Club. Books can be found at the Narberth Library, or on Amazon.com. Please let us know when you sign up whether you intend to attend the discussion at Borough Hall, or call in through Zoom. Next Session: April 2025 (rescheduled from March): "Demon of Unrest" by Erik Larson Drawing on both historical facts and supposition, Erik Larson brilliantly shows the terrible dance of events, emotions, and expectations that occurred during the five months between the election of Abraham Lincoln in November 1860 and the bombing of Fort Sumter in April 1861. On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected president of a divided country. Five months later, on April 12, 1861, Southern rebels from South Carolina fired on Fort Sumter in what eventually became known as the first shot in the American Civil War. What occurred during those intervening five months? What thoughts, fears, and miscommunications led a previously peaceful South Carolina town to turn violent? Was there any way to stop what was coming, or was war always inevitable, the seeds of it planted long before? Using diaries, newspaper articles, letters, historical records, and a good dose of his own imagination, Erik Larson addresses these questions and more, taking us back to a time of unrest and doubt through the eyes of historical figures such as American President Abraham Lincoln, Fort Sumter’s Commander Major Robert Anderson, Southern Radical Edmund Ruffin, and Plantation Owner Mary Boykin Chestnut. In a tale filled with both tragedy and heroism, Larson brings to light the hopes, fears, and misconceptions on both sides, revealing the convoluted path to a conflict which would ultimately claim over 750,000 lives and change America for all time.
