Authors Series
April 2026: Dr. Marlene Kushner: "Sense of Direction" Various published authors come to New Horizons to present their published books and answer questions. Join your friends, neighbors, and literary enthusiasts, and find some new material to read, written by experts in their field. Books are available at the Center before the presentation or on Amazon.com, as well as other locations (see below). Next Session: April 2026: Dr. Marlene Kushner discusses "Sense of Direction": On Friday, April 10, at 1:00 PM author and New Horizons member Marlene Kushner comes to Narberth Borough Hall to discuss her autobiographical novel. “Sense of Direction” is a book that explores both Marlene’s own personal tale of her professional and personal life as a neurodivergent neuropsychologist and also offers insights into how to help students and adults struggling with an “invisible disorder.” Poignant, heartwarming, and informative by turns, the book is, in the words of one critic, “a model of self-determination, never losing its sense of direction.” Join your friends and neighbors to hear about this incredible story of perseverance and personal triumph, told by the one who lived it all. PLEASE NOTE that Lunch has been CANCELLED for this program. We apologize for the inconvenience. Books Currently Available at: Amazon.com MARLENE K. KUSHNER, ED.D., has always looked to raise awareness about those who learn differently. She has served as an accommodation specialist in disability centers at a number of colleges and universities throughout the country. In addition to working with students, she has given presentations to faculties and authored papers for professionals as well as for the general public. During her long service to aid others, she discovered that she herself has several learning disabilities. This fact has given her a unique perspective on how people with such “hidden disorders” function and has helped her to shape several programs to help the learning disabled of all ages. Marlene has earned a number of distinguished degrees in her time, including a B.A., cum laude, at Hunter College of the City University of New York, a M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University, and an Ed.D with a specialization in The Neuropsychology of Learning Disorders from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Among her many rewards and honors are a position in Psi Chi, The National Honor Society of Psychology, a national certification as a School Psychologist, several Ushkow Foundation Grants to work on projects to evaluate programs for learning disabled college students, and a Certificate of Recognition from the Association for Children and Adults with Learning Disabilities. SENSE OF DIRECTION Marlene describes her book as follows: “The book is based upon my personal and professional experiences over decades, providing neuropsychological services to students who are neurodiverse-who learn differently. Although I have served students in all grades, I specialized in working at the college and graduate level. This book is unique in several ways. First, I utilized my neuropsychological training and research to explore the thoughts, emotions and experiences of a person who has ‘invisible disabilities’ such as I do. Second, in addition to my memoir, is material about practices and procedures which are ordinarily inaccessible to the student or parent(s) of the individual receiving services. Third is a section offering resources in two broadly based categories- technological aides as well as associations providing support and information to special populations. One example is The Learning Disability Association of America. Although psychologists often disagree about what constitutes good practice, there are some areas of consensus. Early diagnosis and intervention can be the difference between a successful outcome and one that is significantly less so. Having shared the frustration and pain of students who were not provided the necessary experience and training to handle rigorous university assignments overcame my reluctance to share myself with the public. Finally, there is a section following research into attentional disorders and learning disabilities, beginning in the eighteenth century." In Person at Narberth Borough Hall

Book Club:
April 2026 “The Bees" by Laline Paull with Chris Jackson, Retired Librarian Join Chris Jackson and other book enthusiasts in an in-depth discussion of the chosen book at our monthly Book Club. Books can be found at the Narberth Library, or on Amazon.com. Please let us know when you sign up whether you intend to attend the discussion at Borough Hall, or call in through Zoom. Optional Lunch: Baked Tilapia w/ Mustard Sauce, served at Noon. (Please register for the meal by April 8) Next Session: April 17, 2026: "The Bees" by Laline Paull The life of a worker bee is not easy, or fun. For Flora 717, a bee who dares to express curiosity and courage, it is even more challenging than most. Despite being a member of the lowest caste in her hive, Flora dares to dream and explore beyond the boundaries her society allows. Ordinarily, this would mean her death as a nonconformist, but with the hive threatened from outside forces, she is allowed to live and even to advance her station, moving from sanitation worker, to nursery helper, to forager. Along the way, she learns serval secrets of the hive that shock and fascinate her by turns. But Flora was not meant to know these secrets. As her grasp of certain truths increases, she starts to change irrevocably from the simple bee she had once been to something else altogether. And when her new knowledge causes her to break a rule that cannot be ignored -- the most scared law of all, Flora finds herself in danger from all sides. Faced with an impossible choice, and unable to return to the existence she had before, the young bee must now challenge everything and everyone she ever knew and loved in a terrible battle for her heart and soul. Suspenseful and thought-provoking, this imaginative tale of a young worker bee combines dystopian fantasy with scientific reality and ensures no reader will ever look at a hive the same way again. April 20 at Ashbridge House in Rosemont: "Nonnas": Released on Netflix in May 2025, “Nonnas” explores the true tale of a Brooklyn man with Italian roots who, in order to honor the mother he had recently lost, decided to found a restaurant in her honor. In keeping with the theme of honoring Italian women, and wishing to have real, homestyle food to serve, Joe Scaravella hired only Italian grandmothers, or “Nonnas” to work as his chefs. This choice led to a very unique dining experience in a world where most new eateries fail within a year. Packed with heartwarming moments, hilarious mishaps and familial references, the movie is a must see for culinary enthusiasts and comedy lovers alike. On April 20, beginning at Noon, New Horizons will screen this heartwarming and fun comedy at Ashbridge House. Join us and watch the true tale of Scaravella’s dream from its first conception as a means to honor his late mother to the thriving Enoteca Maria restaurant, which still exists on Staten Island in New York today. No lunch will be served, but snacks will be provided. In Person ONLY at Narberth Borough Hall:
