Authors Series
October 2025: Joel Burcat: "Whiz Kid" Various published authors come to New Horizons to present their published books and answer questions. Join your friends, neighbors, and literary enthusiasts, and find some new material to read, written by experts in their field. Books are available at the Center before the presentation or on Amazon.com, as well as other locations (see below). Last Session: October 2025: Author Joel Burcat discusses "Whiz Kid" On Tuesday, October 21, at 1:00 PM, author Joel Burcat comes to New Horizons to discuss his latest novel "Whiz Kid," a coming of age tale set in the Philadelphia area during the 1950s Phillies Pennant Race. A story within a story, the tale of the book's origins is as fascinating as the novel itself, as the making of "Whiz Kid" is a literary journey that spans generations. Join your friends and neighbors to hear about this tale of sports, family, and difficult decisions that took decades to complete. Q&A session and Book Signing after the lecture. Come early and enjoy a tasty Baked Fish platter, served at Noon. (Please register for the meal by October 15.) Books Currently Available at two locations: Amazon.com The Narberth Book Shop (221 Haverford Ave, Narberth) JOEL BURCAT is a novelist and retired environmental lawyer. His most recent book, co-written with his father David, is "Whiz Kid," historical fiction about 1950 Philadelphia. His previous novels, "Reap the Wind," "Drink to Every Beast," "Amid Rage," and "Strange Fire" have been award-winning thrillers. He is a Gold Medal Winner from Readers’ Favorite, a Finalist of the Next Gen Indie Book Awards, and a winner of the PennWriters Annual Writing Contest. "Strange Fire" was a Kirkus Reviews Best Book of the Week and "Whiz Kid" was a Critic’s Pick. Originally from Philadelphia, he lives in Harrisburg with his wife, Gail. For more information: www.joelburcat.com WHIZ KID In the spring of 1950, war hero Ben Green has returned to South Philly, caught between duty and dreams. With graduation from Penn approaching and a baby on the way, his wife, Debby, urges him to take a stable job at his best friend’s family ad agency. But Ben has other plans: to finish Match Point, a novel about a South Philly underdog’s rise to Wimbledon glory. As the Phillies’ “Whiz Kids” chase the pennant, Ben faces temptation in many forms. In a city buzzing with hope yet fractured by antisemitism, racism, and class, Ben walks a tightrope between the working-class Jewish roots of his past and the seductive promise of success and a home on Philly’s Main Line. With October fast approaching, he must decide: play it safe—or swing for everything. Whiz Kid is a powerful coming-of-age story set in 1950 Philly of ambition, loyalty, love, and the price of following your heart. Co-Writer, David S. Burcat’s novella, Match Point, was lost for 60 years and appears as Ben Green’s novel in this story written by a son and his late father. In Person at Narberth Borough Hall

February 2026 “Demon Copperhead” by Barbara Kingslover with Chris Jackson, Retired Librarian Join Chris Jackson and other book enthusiasts in an in-depth discussion of the chosen book at our monthly Book Club. Books can be found at the Narberth Library, or on Amazon.com. Please let us know when you sign up whether you intend to attend the discussion at Borough Hall, or call in through Zoom. Optional Lunch: Baked Tilapia w/ Mustard Sauce, served at Noon. (Please register for the meal by February 11) Next Session: February 20, 2026: "Demon Copperhead" by Barbara Kinglsover In the area known as Southern Appalachia, set within the framework of a small mountain coal town dealing with poverty, depression, and drugs, a young man tells the tale of his life. Taking readers on a journey from his birth onward, Demon Copperhead presents a plain-spoken view of the parts of society that many like to ignore through the eyes of one who has lived it all. A powerful tale that evokes emotional responses on every page, this re-imagined modern look at Charles Dicken’s novel “David Copperfield” depicts some of the darkest parts of human society -- and showcases those who never allow themselves to give up trying to be better. Born to a single mother in her teens struggling with drug addiction and poverty, in a town that has too many problems of its own to care, Appalachia native Damon Fields could be said to have had Fate against him from the beginning. And as his unhappy childhood progresses into a troubled adolescence, it certainly seems that way. From abusive foster care, to addictive pain relievers, to ignorant officials, “Demon” (so named for his flaming red hair) struggles with everything society and his own apparent bad luck throw his way. Even when things seem to be looking up, it never lasts for long. At times, he seems to be about to fall off the precipice, spiraling into depression, hatred, and misery. But though he comes to the edge, the stubborn young man never quite tips over, and in the end he realizes how much has actually helped him along the way. Dark and painful, this modern-day rendition of Charles Dickens’ timeless classic takes readers deep into the truths of the life of the impoverished both in property and spirit…and shows how even those caught in a downward spiral can still fight to rise again.
