with Carolyn Vachani, Therapeutic Horticulturalist New Horizons hosts various presenters at the Center, both in person and on Zoom. in the past, the topics have been as varied as Making Baseball Gloves, Watching Indian Dance, Learning about Various Actors and Actresses, and everything in between. You never know what new and exciting topic will be at the Center next! Last Session: May 2024: "Therapeutic Benefits of Gardening" Join Carolyn Vachani, Therapeutic Horticulturalist, in an hour long discussion of the many benefits and advantages of creating and maintaining your own garden plot. Learn about the different therapeutic opportunities hidden within simple plants and share your personal stories of relaxing or entertaining moments in your own plot with other gardening enthusiasts. First Ladies as Activists (1920s -- 2020s) with Katherine Sibley, PhD Prof of History at St. Joe’s University Various speakers and presenters offer their historical expertise to interested participants. Join with other history enthusiasts to learn about different pivotal moments in history and how they shaped our world today. Last Session: July 2024: "First Ladies as Activists: 1920s--2020s" with Katherine Sibley, PhD Join Katherine Sibley, PhD, as she gives a presentation focusing on a number of U.S. First Ladies in their work as activists and advocates, starting with Florence Harding in 1921. Exploring ten first ladies, the discussion will highlight not only Harding but Lou Hoover, Eleanor Roosevelt, Lady Bird Johnson, Rosalynn Carter, Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, Michelle Obama, and Jill Biden. Join other history enthusiasts and learn how the First Ladies’ influence and agency has been of growing significance over the last century. Bring your questions! In Person at Narberth Borough Hall

Sibley is Professor of History and William Dirk Warren ’50 Sesquicentennial Faculty Chair (Social Sciences and Health Sciences), at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, where she has taught since 1991. She was a co-Founder of the First Ladies Association for Research and Education (FLARE) in 2021, and is currently editing a series on First Ladies with the University Press of Kansas. Also in 2021, she edited Southern First Ladies: Culture and Place in White House History; her two other books on first ladies include A Companion to First Ladies (2016), and First Lady Florence Harding: Behind the Tragedy and Controversy (2009). In her other area of interest, American communist history, she recently co-edited a work drawing on new findings in the Soviet archives: Post-Cold War Revelations and the American Communist Party: Citizens, Revolutionaries, Spies (2021). She served for twelve years with the Advisory Committee on Historical Diplomatic Documentation at the U.S. State Department (2005-2017). She has also participated as a speaker in the Department of State’s Study of the U.S. Institutes Program since 2022. She is the author and editor of several other books, including Red Spies in America: Stolen Secrets and the Dawn of the Cold War (2004) and A Companion to Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover (2014), and is currently writing a book on Michelle Obama’s role as first lady.

Offered only a few times a year, this program hosts different speakers who address such varying concerns as Budgeting for Retirement, Medicaid and Medicare, and Wills, among other topics. Last Session: April 2024: "Popular Scams and How to Avoid Them" Join George Dillman from the PA Dept of Banking Securities and learn about some of the most popular scams in existence today. People are being tricked out of thousands of dollars every day. Hear tips and tricks you can use to avoid some of the worst of these tactics and dodge the fate of many other innocent victims.
