Book Club:
The Art Forger with Chris Jackson, Retired Librarian You are invited to join Chris Jackson and other book enthusiasts in an in-depth discussion of the chosen book at our monthly Book Club. Books can be found at the Narberth Library, Amazon.com, or try shopping locally at our local bookstores. Please let us know when you sign up whether you intend to attend the discussion at Borough Hall, or call in through Zoom. This Month: The Art Forger by Barbara Shapiro Claire Roth is no stranger to forgeries and bad choices, having once painted a work of art for a former lover who claimed it as his own. When Claire tried to prove the painting was in fact her work, she was nicknamed “the great pretender” and blacklisted from every major museum in the country. So, when gallery owner Aiden Markell offers her a place in his museum for her works in exchange for Claire’s forging a copy of the Degas painting “After the Bath” -- a painting stolen from the Gardner Museum almost 20 years before, and which Markell now has in his possession -- Claire jumps at the chance. But the world of art is not always what it seems, especially when dealing in big names and even bigger money. It does not take Claire long to realize that the painting she is supposed to reproduce, the very painting that hung in the Gardner Museum in New York for almost 100 years before its disappearance in the 1990s, might itself be a very clever forgery. Faced with this truth, Claire struggles with the seemingly impossible question: How can the “the great pretender” convince anyone that the famous Degas painting is actually a fake? And should she even try? |

This Month: "The Joy Luck Club": Four mother and daughter pairs reminisce about their different and intertwining life experiences, set to the backdrop of a gathering of their special “Joy Luck Club.” Join New Horizons in celebrating the Chinese New Year by watching this extraordinary tale of courage, ingenuity, and luck as told by four Chinese American women and their incredibly resilient mothers. A tale told in 8 parts, this heartwarming – and heartbreaking – story based on the 1989 novel by the same name written by Amy Tan traces the fluctuating fortunes of eight women, from the time of their births to their present-day inclusion in a special group formed by the oldest four. Born in China, Lindo Jong, Ying-Ying St. Clair, An-Mei Hsu, and Suyuan Woo all follow different paths of pain and perseverance, that ultimately lead each of them to the United States of America and the forming of a special group. But their extraordinary journeys do not end there, as each gives birth to a daughter with her own unique qualities. And now the four younger women must face challenges of their own, as they struggle to balance their Chinese ancestry and upbringing with the expectations of the American society they were born to--all while facing the daunting prospect of trying to live up to their mothers’ seemingly impossible expectations. |
